Pearson has agreed a partnership with online learning provider EdX to offer test centres for students taking its courses.
EdX is a not-for-profit collaboration between leading US universities that allows students to take degree courses online. It had planned to get its students to agree to an ‘honour code’ before taking their tests online, and offer them a certificate upon completion.
On Thursday, however, it announced that, starting in January, students will instead be able to take their tests in a formal test centre managed by Pearson. The education giant ultimately aims to provide 450 such centres in 110 countries.
EdX president Anant Agarwal said: “This option enhances the value of our courses in the real world, and helps us maintain our goal of making high-quality education both accessible and practical.”
Pearson has not disclosed how much each exam will cost.
EdX is a collaboration between Harvard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the University of California. Harvard and MIT both committed $30 million (£18 million) to the platform which was announced in May this year.
Pearson also formed a similar partnership with for-profit online learning provider Udacity in June this year, and provided testing centres for the firm’s August examinations. The exams cost $89 per student.
