Global media giant News Corp has unveiled further details of its plan for the education sector.
In a statement released on Monday Joel Klein, the chief executive of News Corp’s education arm, unveiled its new brandname ‘Amplify’.
The new division will offer digital products and services for parents and teachers of school age children. It’s also teamed up with telecommunication provider AT&T to provide products such as tablet computers and wifi services to US schools during the 2012-13 academic year.
Klein said in Monday’s statement: “Amplify will introduce new products in a thoughtful way, so that technology can finally live up to its promise to advance learning and augment teaching for students, teachers and parents everywhere.”
Amplify will include three sub-divisions; educational analytics, digital content, and new distribution platforms.
News Corp announced plans to launch an education arm in 2010, and acquired a 90% education software company Wireless Generation in a $360 million (£229 million) deal later that year. Since then, however, there’s been little news of the new venture, leading to speculation that the UK phone hacking scandal was delaying its roll out.
Earlier this year Wireless Generation’s chief executive Larry Berger told the Wall Street Journal that the firm had looked at additional acquisitions, but had decided instead to focus on developing new products.
This week’s announcement is part of a larger restructuring by News Corp as it prepares to split into two separate publicly traded corporations.
The education division will join News Corp’s newspapers and its HarperCollins book division in a newly formed publishing company. Meanwhile, the group’s entertainment assets will form another, larger company.
