Vancouver-based Course Studio, a new online education start-up, has raised $1 million, led by ed tech investor and operator Tonner Jackson, one of the company’s founders.

Course Studio creates professionally produced online learning experiences. The company initially worked earlier this year on creating a ‘MasterClass for Sports’ concept featuring athletes, but the project fell through, prompting a pivot to online learning covering a variety of topics.

Jackson said: “We were very much a reaction to coronavirus. We wouldn’t have a business without it. The way we’re producing is very expensive, highly-produced content, and there are some novel ways of doing that remotely which a lot of people are asking for right now.”

He added that Course Studio will focus on producing a few comprehensive courses a year that will be sold online, with the aim of bringing in $1 million in revenue per class each year.

Jackson said the company will produce and build the curriculum for the classes and is looking for partners that already have a large audience for which an online platform can be created.
