Online language learning tool Toucan has raised $3 million in seed funding led by GSV Ventures, with participation from Amplifyher Ventures, Wonder Ventures, Golden Ventures, Halogen Ventures, Vitalize Ventures, as well as strategic angel investors, TechCrunch has reported.

Toucan’s Chrome browser extension automatically translates words into the language the user is trying to learn. The extension scans the text of any English-language website the user visits and automatically translates the words into Spanish, French, Italian, German or Portuguese.

The company’s chief procurement officer Brandon Dietz said that while language learning software like Rosetta Stone and Duolingo has proved successful, “it’s just such a high ask to get people to change their behaviour and go to this one website”.

Toucan is based in Santa Monica, California.
